DEHYDRATION is defined as an inadequate amount of fluid in the body, or fluid is lost faster than the replenishing rate. Did you know that the human adult body is up to 60% water1? You need to maintain a balance and staying well hydrated can be a challenge. A fluid loss of 1-2% can impair performance2.
So how does your body keep this balance? A process called homeostasis. Your body has a special receptor that detect changes happening inside of you and constantly working to respond accurately. The first response in a dehydrated scenario is the thirst trigger. However, the fluid you lose is not just water but also key minerals your body needs to function – better known as electrolytes. Water is a necessity, but water alone can’t put the electrolytes back.
Electrolytes aren’t just critical in sports settings after you’ve worked up a good sweat. They are a key part of good health and ensuring the proper functioning of the overall body. The body must maintain a delicate balance between the various electrolytes, since even small fluctuations can cause serious side effects.
Choose wisely! Not every electrolyte beverage fits all. Everyone is unique in their own way and have various dietary preferences. It is also important to consider health and premedical conditions when selecting an electrolyte. Some individuals do best with low sodium (hypertensive), no sugar and low calorie (diabetics), or dye-free options. The Sqwincher® brand is ready to assist.
